Sofa Secrets: How to Choose the Right Seat Depth and Cushions

Pick the right seat cushion and you’ll stay in love with your sofa for years

You want your sofa to be super comfortable, right? That’s why you need to pay special attention to the seat cushions. Factors like seat depth and cushion fill work together to create different amounts of support and softness. Not everyone will like the same kind of cushions, so here’s how to choose the best combination for your personal tastes.

The importance of seat depth. When shopping for a comfortable sofa, one of the most important things to pay attention to is the inside seat depth. This is different from the overall depth, which is the distance from the back of the sofa to the front.

The inside seat depth is measured from the front of the seat to the back cushion. An average sofa’s seat depth ranges from 21 to 24 inches, but you can find many options outside of that range.

If you like to sit upright in your sofa, choose a shorter seat depth. The exact number will vary depending on your height, but 20 to 22 inches tends to be a good range for most people to sit up comfortably. To figure out the seat depth you prefer, sit in a few different sofas and measure the one that works best for you.

If you like to lounge back or sit with your feet tucked up on the sofa, a deeper seat depth is probably good for you. Go for a depth that’s at least 23 inches, and feel free to go even deeper.

Seat depth and design. Don’t forget to consider the size of your room when choosing seat depth. A super deep sofa doesn’t work well in a small space — it just looks out of place. If a deep seat is important to you but you have a small space, go for an inside depth of 23 inches. And to avoid having a comically large-looking sofa, balance a deeper seat with either low arms or visible legs. This keeps your space looking open instead of overwhelmed by the sofa.

Seat height. If you have difficulty getting out of low seats, make sure to measure the seat height of any sofa you’re considering. This is how high off the ground the seat is. If a seat is lower than 18 inches, it might be hard to get up from, especially if the seat depth is more than 23 inches.

The inner life of seat cushions. There are a few different ways to construct a seat cushion, and the inside design determines a seat’s level of support and comfort. Most cushions are constructed with a supportive core surrounded by a soft layer. It’s the materials in those parts that determine the firmness of the cushion. While each manufacturer has its own seat cushion options, most are a variation of the following four types.

1. 100 percent down. Cushions that are 100 percent down do not have a middle core — they’re basically huge bed pillows. They’re incredibly soft, but it comes at a cost. All-down cushions flatten out quickly because there’s no core to help them hold their shape. As a result, they require a lot of flipping and fluffing. And since they lack a core, over time you may be able to feel the sofa suspension beneath them.

2. Down-wrapped. If you like to sink down into your sofa, go with a down-wrapped cushion. This type of cushion consists of a foam core wrapped in down. You’ll still get a nice, soft seat but the cushions won’t flatten out as quickly as 100 percent down. That said, they still may require frequent flipping and rotating to keep their shape.

3. Fiber-wrapped. Fiber-wrapped cushions have a foam core wrapped in polyester fiber. These still provide a soft seat, but they’re a little more supportive than the down-filled options. They’re also better at holding their shape, so they aren’t as high-maintenance.

4. Inner-spring. The most supportive seat cushions will have an inner-spring core (imagine the inside of a mattress) instead of a foam core. The spring core is often wrapped in down, but you can also find it with a fiber wrapping. This option is great if you want a supportive seat and don’t want to worry about a cushion holding its shape.

Final consideration: How many cushions? A single seat cushion is called a bench seat. You’ll see it on many modern styles, but bench seats are also a great way to update a more traditional frame. This style has several benefits: You can squeeze a bunch of people on your sofa without someone having to sit on a crack, you won’t lose change or toys between the cushions. It also transforms into a great makeshift bed for overnight guests. The negative: These cushions are a little more difficult to flip or rotate.

Sofas with two seat cushions are a roomy spot for two people to relax. They can be found on both traditional and more modern styles. The downside to this configuration is that if you wanted a third person to sit down, they would have to sit in the crack between the cushions.

Three seat cushions provide an individual spot for three people to sit. While many traditional styles have three seat cushions, this look is also found on more modern styles. Three cushions may not look as clean-lined as a bench seat or two cushions, but this is a great choice if you want to maximize seating space.

Aside from choosing the colour and the fabric of the sofa, keep in mind the quality and personal comfort. Thus arises the age-old question – is a soft or a firm sofa better?

This is a question that many of our customers have asked us. While a soft sofa might be comfortable, there are many disadvantages that come with it.

Soft Sofas

A soft sofa initially may be the obvious choice, but too comfortable a sofa may actually be ruining your back. Physiotherapists have warned against soft sofas with deep cushions as 20% of customers who have purchased soft sofas have complained of lower backache and shoulder strain. Soft sofas actually encourage people to slouch rather than facilitate good postural habits. “Soft upholstery may not give the spine and neck the support that is required,” notes Richard Evans, physiotherapist of the Back and Body Clinic, “by sitting for too long, especially in a poor postural or slumped position you can add a tremendous amount of pressure to your back, overstretch the spinal ligaments and increase the pressure on your intervertebral discs. This in turn can lead to on-going aches and pains.”

Kids and Pets

However, softer sofas are particularly popular for those with kids. Kids might not be big enough to sit fully on the sofa, so having a soft sofa allows them to lie on the seat cushion, and kids generally have lots of fun bouncing around on them. However, those with pets should note that softer sofas are more susceptible to wear and tear should your pet like to lie on your sofa a lot. A common case is an indentation in the shape of your pet forming in the soft sofa.

Firm Sofas

On the other hand, firm sofas are ideal for optimum back support. In addition to promoting good posture, firm sofas are also good for hosting guests. Sofas soften with prolonged use, so getting a firm sofa will become soft over time. However, too firm a sofa can take away the joy of sinking into a comfortable sofa after a long day of work, so ensure that you strike a balance. Adding soft cushions can boost the profile of the sofa, ensuring a good mix of softness and firmness that you can enjoy.  If your sofa would be used to host guests often, a firmer sofa would definitely be the better choice, as a soft sofa is much less durable. A firm sofa makes sitting upright and talking easier,  as compared to sinking back on a soft seat, providing a comfortable talking environment.

If you’ve been searching for well-made, stylish couches or sofas for your home, and can’t find what you want, consider the option of custom-made couches. While most regular shops, on the high street or in real-life shopping malls, offer relatively limited ranges, there are all sorts of other possibilities to explore.

For example, you can have sofas designed especially for you, or you can ask a manufacturer to imitate an existing look. Alternatively, many companies have their own specialized ranges with a choice of finishes that they maintain produces a “custom-made” piece of furniture.

What the term custom-made means
When we talk about custom-made items we generally mean that these are made according to the specifications of a particular person who is buying that product. Similarly, when we say furniture and building structures are custom-built we mean that they are constructed according to what the customer wants. The alternative is to buy things off-the-shelf or ready-made. What this means is that you then choose from whatever has already been constructed, manufactured or produced.

In reality, manufacturers of so-called custom-made furniture tend to combine concepts. This is probably why another term, “customer-made” is also used by some contemporary manufacturers. What this relatively new term implies is that you can design your own couch within the parameters set by the company that will actually make it for you.

The procedure to be followed when looking for individualistic couches and sofas for customer-made pieces could follow this basic process:

• choose the couch design you like best,
• specify the size of the couch according to set dimensions,
• choose a fabric or leather to be used to cover the couch,
• decide on your personal level of comfort which will determine the way the couch is made.

You will probably agree that this sounds like an excellent concept.

Custom-made versus off-the-shelf

The main difference between any type of custom-made and the usual off-the-shelf furniture (be it couches or dining room suites) is that with the former you are offered some sort of exclusivity and/or individuality. The latter might cost the same, but it is possible for all your friends and neighbors to buy exactly the same stuff. If you are wanting “custom”, chances are you won’t want your neighbors to copy.

This isn’t where it stops. The custom-made concept also relates to the size of furniture that is made especially for you.

You may, for example live in a tiny apartment that simply can’t accommodate the dimensions of a sofa design that you love. By going to a specialist manufacturer you can have what you really like, but on a smaller scale – provided of course the scale actually does work in your home.

Just be careful of con artists who promise to do the job but don’t understand how design factors (specifically size and scale) work. You might end up with something that looks really awful after spending a whole lot of money. If your aren’t sure, buy what you can see and sit on before you pay for it.

What to look for when buying a couch

Whatever type of couch or sofa you want to buy, first and foremost decide on a style. Also have a good idea of what you want in terms of color and finish. A couch is really what designers call an “anchor” piece, with other chairs, tables and so on adding to the general design scheme. For this reason it is wise to choose the best couch or couches you can afford.

Stores that offer custom-made couches usually display basic pieces in a range of shapes and sizes. Make sure you identify exactly what it is you want. For instance the length of a couch may be anything from 137 cm to 229 cm. Arm and back heights may also vary. You may end up paying a bit more for a custom size, but if it works for you there is absolutely no doubt that it will be worth it.

Even if you only want one couch, consider seating for at least six people. Very few people stay at home alone for their entire lives! Maybe think of buying two custom made couches. Otherwise buy a few single chairs for people to sit on.

Remember that upholstered furniture can always be reupholstered in a different fabric later on when your tastes change or when you can afford something better. With this in mind, it is sometimes better to buy a secondhand piece of furniture that has been really well made, and then have it reupholstered in a trendy fabric or in leather. It might not seem to be “custom” made, but often the older designs are a lot better, particularly when good-quality wood has been used to make them.

Finding a suitable manufacturer
The best way to find reputable, reliable and reasonable manufacturers of custom-made couches and other furniture is often word of mouth. If your friends have had a good experience, then it is certainly worth trying the same company. Another way is to check out advertisements posted or placed by manufacturers who say that they do what you need.

Direct Sofa manufacturer does not mean cheap but you will get better value for your dollar!

I know we are direct manufacturers, but seriously, are you really expecting a 2.2m, 3-seater brand new custom-made sofa with fabrics at S$900/- dollars? This is entirely Made in Singapore!

Perhaps you might be able to find it at some low budget furniture stores that offer HUGE discounts for their display set?  Perhaps you might get it from another less developed country? Or maybe you can get it at garage sales?

Whatever it is, we are unable to do it at that price!

Here are the reasons why…

So please be wary of people or products that offer cut throat prices. Like the old saying that goes, if it is too good to be true, you should probably think twice! So do go to reputable manufacturers that are not only transparent in their dealings with you but also has good referrals from your friends.

For example, we have an open policy of showing you what we have at our workshop and at the same time you are able to request to view your custom make sofa at every stage of the manufacturing process. This is reliability that you can trust.

The cost of using our service at our workshop is certainly not the cheapest in the market. However, it pays to have peace of mind right? Prices really depend on the complexity of the sofa that you want. Generally the fabric choice is also what determines the cost of your sofa. Certain fabrics which are imported from Europe, Belgium and South Africa do cost more.

Prices for a single new custom made sofa may cost anything between SGD 1.9k to 4.5k. No hidden cost. Only peace of mind and a guarantee for excellent workmanship!
