Buying a new contemporary sofa is a big decision, and a decision that we don’t make too often. We live with our sofas for 11 years (according to a UK survey in 2017) and put them through some interesting challenges.

Our sofas are lounged upon, sat and stood on. They hide toys and money in curious places and are often substitute beds for weekend guests. It’s no wonder it’s such an important purchase decision, so our helpful guide will navigate you through this important moment.

Function

What will you use your sofa for? Formal entertaining? Relaxing with family? Or perhaps this sofa will live in your entrance hall? Whatever its use, we have a guide to help you buy the perfect contemporary sofa.

If you want to lounge on your sofa watching TV or scrolling through your favourite blog on your iPad, choose a contemporary sofa with enough width that you can stretch out fully on. Usually this requires a 3-seat sofa to give you enough space to stretch. If you don’t have enough room for a 3-seat sofa, buy a 2-seat sofa with a matching footstool to perch your feet. Look for a contemporary sofa with deep, soft cushions that you can sink in to after a long day at work to really relax on and switch off.

If you tend to prefer formal entertainment on your sofa, a solid structure will help to keep you and your guests upright and not slouching. A wooden frame with harder cushions will be ideal for this scenario, keeping your sofa in perfect order for when your guests arrive.

If you need a sofa for guests to use as they arrive, a small or compact sofa is best for this. Choose a sofa lifted off the ground by wooden legs, as this will create a feeling of space in a small area. Shallow cushions offer support for guests whilst they wait to be greeted.

Size

Probably the most important consideration is the size of your new sofa. There is only one tip for this, and that is to measure, measure, and measure! It’s not easy to visualise how much space the contemporary sofa will take up in the room, so use newspaper on the floor to map out the space it creates. Even go as far as lightly taping newspaper to the wall to show the height of the back. If you’re getting a little more creative, cardboard boxes filling the area can help you imagine better.

Make sure you have enough room to walk between the sofa and coffee table…a good rule of thumb is 45cm (18”) between the two. If you can, allow 10cm (4”) between the back of the sofa and the wall. This will create an illusion of space and make it easier to find those toys you’ve lost behind your sofa.

If your sofa looks too big in the room, it probably is. There are no rules for how small or big your sofa needs to be, but if you can’t walk around the room comfortably then something needs to go. Whilst it might be your dream to have that large sectional sofa dominating the room, it will make your room feel smaller and you’ll be forever bumping in to it as you walk by.

Measuring

Now that you know what size sofa fits in your room, we need to make sure it can get to the room in the first place.

You will need to check:
1. Height and width of doorways
2. Accessibility through hallways and staircases
3. Packaged dimensions, not just the sofa dimensions

It’s a common question we get asked…will it fit? We list the packaged dimensions for all of our sofas on the product page under ‘Dimensions’ with height, width, depth, seat-height, seat-depth, and arm-height. Make a note of these and check against your measurements.

Delivery

When it comes to delivery, knowing your sofa will fit is crucial. If it’s a tight space, you may need to move objects and furniture that will be in the way. Walk the route that your sofa will take and check for obstructions; even small objects could get in the way.

We offer a 2-man delivery service where possible to get your sofa directly to your room of choice, however in some cases we cannot provide this. If you are taking delivery of your sofa, it’s a good idea to have a few people to help so that you aren’t caught out with a sofa stuck on the stairs.

The key thing is to measure! If you know the contemporary sofa will fit through every door or your lifts, then delivery will be a dream.

Shape & Style

The shape and style of your sofa is important for multiple reasons, not just for the way it looks but how it will work for its use. Look for special details such as the seat buttons, external stitching, removable covers, and articulating headrests.

If your room is small, narrower sofa arms or no arms at all give the illusion of more space. High-backed sofas tend to look best in rooms with higher ceilings and sofas with lower backs can give the illusion of more space in confined rooms. Modular and sectional sofas work brilliantly in open-plan spaces and large airy rooms.

Support & Comfort

Comfort isn’t just about soft cushions. If you will be using your sofa a lot then it’s important to consider how well it supports you to make sure you’re comfortable for long periods of time. Most of our contemporary sofas have low-backs, as they are visually lighter in living rooms.

Do you prefer soft or hard seats? This is an important question to discuss with the other people in your home before your purchase. If you like to lounge in the sofa then soft cushions are ideal, but for more support, choose a hard seat to keep your posture upright.

Upholstery

Our fabric sofas offer you a wide range of colour options and tightly woven fabrics will wear the best. Wool is springy and resilient, with a natural stain resistance. However, linen is cool and one of the most durable fabrics for sofas. Leather is robust, cool in summer and warm in winter and if it’s well maintained it can last a lifetime. Leather will age with use adding character and stands up to wear and tear very well. However, in Singapore’s weather of high humility, leather may become smelly and mouldy over time. We have also noticed that increasely, people do not want cruelty of animal skin in their home too.

Care

You can extend the life of your sofa by taking care of it regularly. Naturally there will be spills, and scuffs, and drops as you live with your sofa but that doesn’t have to mean it reduces the life expectancy of the sofa.

Some of our fabric sofas come with removable covers and some without. If your previous sofas have been subjected to a lot of food and drink spills then you might want to find a sofa with removable covers. This allows you to clean them periodically and restore the vibrancy. Use a professional cleaner when doing so to avoid shrinking the covers; make them aware of any marks or spillages that need their attention. If you don’t have removable covers, act quickly and blot the stain out of the fabric with a clean white cloth, but never rub as this may spread the stain further into the fabric. Never use detergents and always follow the cleaning instructions on the label of the sofa.

Avoid pets on fabric sofas as their claws can pull at threads, but if this does happen just snip the loose thread and tuck as much of it back in the weave. Never pull the thread, as this will make it worse.

Don’t underestimate the importance of a sofa – it is the crown jewel of the living room. We spend hours on it chatting to guests, napping on it after a long day and watching our favourite television shows, so choose the right sofa suited to your preference!

Aside from choosing the colour and the fabric of the sofa, keep in mind the quality and personal comfort. Thus arises the age-old question – is a soft or a firm sofa better?

This is a question that many of our customers have asked us. While a soft sofa might be comfortable, there are many disadvantages that come with it.

Soft Sofas

A soft sofa initially may be the obvious choice, but too comfortable a sofa may actually be ruining your back. Physiotherapists have warned against soft sofas with deep cushions as 20% of customers who have purchased soft sofas have complained of lower backache and shoulder strain. Soft sofas actually encourage people to slouch rather than facilitate good postural habits. “Soft upholstery may not give the spine and neck the support that is required,” notes Richard Evans, physiotherapist of the Back and Body Clinic, “by sitting for too long, especially in a poor postural or slumped position you can add a tremendous amount of pressure to your back, overstretch the spinal ligaments and increase the pressure on your intervertebral discs. This in turn can lead to on-going aches and pains.”

Kids and Pets

However, softer sofas are particularly popular for those with kids. Kids might not be big enough to sit fully on the sofa, so having a soft sofa allows them to lie on the seat cushion, and kids generally have lots of fun bouncing around on them. However, those with pets should note that softer sofas are more susceptible to wear and tear should your pet like to lie on your sofa a lot. A common case is an indentation in the shape of your pet forming in the soft sofa.

Firm Sofas

On the other hand, firm sofas are ideal for optimum back support. In addition to promoting good posture, firm sofas are also good for hosting guests. Sofas soften with prolonged use, so getting a firm sofa will become soft over time. However, too firm a sofa can take away the joy of sinking into a comfortable sofa after a long day of work, so ensure that you strike a balance. Adding soft cushions can boost the profile of the sofa, ensuring a good mix of softness and firmness that you can enjoy.  If your sofa would be used to host guests often, a firmer sofa would definitely be the better choice, as a soft sofa is much less durable. A firm sofa makes sitting upright and talking easier,  as compared to sinking back on a soft seat, providing a comfortable talking environment.

Most Common Reasons to Replace a Sofa

Sofas: Consider replacing your sofa before the seats start sagging to the point of not supporting you, the fabric has become stained and worn, and the frame is breaking down or squeaking. How long should a couch last? On average, a typical sofa lasts between 7 and 15 years.

Now that you’re familiar with the general lifespan of household items and furniture, it’s also important to look at other criteria when deciding how often to buy new furniture. After all, lifespan is not the only consideration. What are some other factors when deciding whether to replace a piece of furniture?

 

When the fabric of the sofa or couch starts to show signs of wear and tear, indicating that the material is fraying where it shouldn’t, it’s time to start looking for a new couch. What about the sofa with the fading color? If you have your sofa near a window, chances are that the natural sunlight coming through the window will fade the upholstery over time. That sofa that once matched your other furniture, drapes and carpet now clashes, because the faded color simply doesn’t match.

 

A sofa that starts to creak is in need of replacement. Creaking may be the first sign that the sofa’s structure is starting to break down, and you should look for a new one. You don’t want to wait until a spring pops loose and starts to poke your guests as they make themselves comfortable after enjoying themselves at a dinner party you’ve just hosted.

 

Or perhaps the scenario starts when you got that first job out of college. You were thrilled to be able to furnish the only apartment you’ve ever had to yourself, buying some inexpensive pieces at a chain furniture store. Fast-forward ten years, and you are moderately successful in a new job and now have the salary to upgrade not only your kitchen but also your living room. It’s time for that inexpensive couch to go.

 

Ask yourself whether the sofa is still comfortable. If it’s great, but sags to the point that you feel there is little cushion left, then it’s time to look for a replacement.

 

Replacing vs. Reupholstering Furniture

 

If you are really attached to the sofas that you inherited from your grandmother (perhaps, because you’ve got fond memories of her teaching you to knit while sitting on one), you’ll have to decide whether to reupholster the sofas or buy new ones. If you really like the sofa, but want to eliminate the signs of wear and tear, reupholstering is just the option for you. However, there are several questions to consider before jumping in.

 

• Is the piece an antique? In order to prevent harming the piece through the reupholstering process, make sure that you find a specialist in reupholstering antique furniture.

 

• What type of fabric is best? If you are particular about the fabric type and pattern that you want to use for your piece, it may be easier to have someone reupholster it than to find that type of fabric and pattern in a new piece of furniture.

 

• Is the sofa’s structure sound? As long as your furniture is structurally sound, and the fabric is the only part that is really worn, reupholstering might be a good option for you and end up saving you money in the long run. An old sofa that has retained its structure of at least ten years likely has a sound frame.

 

• Should I do this myself? The craftiest person with a lot of time on their hands and a desire to learn a new skill might want to embark on a DIY project. You may have to take a class or learn about the techniques either by reading books or using the internet, but it is an option that may save you money.

 

If you are considering reupholstering yourself but you have neither the money nor the time to take on a project, you may want to think about a temporary fix. If you have a sofa with multiple stains, and you have tried to get them out with various stain removers, try using a steam cleaner instead. A small steam cleaner will generally cost less than $200.

 

Or if you have tried steam cleaning, but the stains still won’t come out, you may cover the stains with an inexpensive throw or some pillows. Making the pillows yourself is an option with a few simple tools such as a pillow stuffer, some fabric tape which can be ironed on, a pair of rotary cutters and a cutting mat.

 

While this fix is only temporary until you can tackle a complete reupholster, it may help you if you are just trying to make your old sofa presentable for an upcoming dinner party.

 

Determining if a Piece of Furniture is Structurally Sound for Reupholstering

 

See if you can find out what type of frame your piece of furniture has. If it has a wood frame put together with wooden pins (rather than staples), it’s more likely to be sound. If the frame is a metal frame and uses staples, there is less chance that it makes sense to reuse. Even professionals will probably tell you that it isn’t a wise idea to try to repair a piece that isn’t good quality.

 

Examine the springs in the frame. The best quality springs are coiled and tied with twine. The use of rubber panels in place of springs means that you should probably reconsider reupholstering.

 

Frames that are visible, often on antique furniture, are usually made of wood such as mahogany or cherry, and often don’t need to be repaired. Changing the shape of a frame is not something that an upholster can or will do. If the shape of the furniture is changed, it will change the entire integrity of the piece.

 

Check out the foam of the sofa. If the foam on the back and the arms is easily compressed, it’s probably sub-standard foam and is not worth reupholstering. If you find firm or even lumpy foam, chances are that the firm foam is more amenable to being reupholstered.

 

Additional Reasons to Reupholster

 

One of the aspects of upholstery to think about is if you have a piece of furniture that is sound but needs to be changed, such as raising the back of the chair. A skilled upholsterer would be able to alter the chair in such a way as to raise the back and give you more support.

 

You can ask the upholsterer to save the old fabric for you. You may be able to find an alternative use for it.

 

Last but not least, you will need to know how long it will take for them to complete the project, as well as the cost. You will want to research whether it will cost more to reupholster or to purchase new. Factors that can contribute to the cost are the number of cushions in need of repair, the type of fabric (you’ll need extra fabric for a pattern that needs elements lined up), repairing the frame or legs or adding a skirt. If you need to have your piece picked up and delivered, that will cost extra as well.

If you’ve been searching for well-made, stylish couches or sofas for your home, and can’t find what you want, consider the option of custom-made couches. While most regular shops, on the high street or in real-life shopping malls, offer relatively limited ranges, there are all sorts of other possibilities to explore.

For example, you can have sofas designed especially for you, or you can ask a manufacturer to imitate an existing look. Alternatively, many companies have their own specialized ranges with a choice of finishes that they maintain produces a “custom-made” piece of furniture.

What the term custom-made means
When we talk about custom-made items we generally mean that these are made according to the specifications of a particular person who is buying that product. Similarly, when we say furniture and building structures are custom-built we mean that they are constructed according to what the customer wants. The alternative is to buy things off-the-shelf or ready-made. What this means is that you then choose from whatever has already been constructed, manufactured or produced.

In reality, manufacturers of so-called custom-made furniture tend to combine concepts. This is probably why another term, “customer-made” is also used by some contemporary manufacturers. What this relatively new term implies is that you can design your own couch within the parameters set by the company that will actually make it for you.

The procedure to be followed when looking for individualistic couches and sofas for customer-made pieces could follow this basic process:

• choose the couch design you like best,
• specify the size of the couch according to set dimensions,
• choose a fabric or leather to be used to cover the couch,
• decide on your personal level of comfort which will determine the way the couch is made.

You will probably agree that this sounds like an excellent concept.

Custom-made versus off-the-shelf

The main difference between any type of custom-made and the usual off-the-shelf furniture (be it couches or dining room suites) is that with the former you are offered some sort of exclusivity and/or individuality. The latter might cost the same, but it is possible for all your friends and neighbors to buy exactly the same stuff. If you are wanting “custom”, chances are you won’t want your neighbors to copy.

This isn’t where it stops. The custom-made concept also relates to the size of furniture that is made especially for you.

You may, for example live in a tiny apartment that simply can’t accommodate the dimensions of a sofa design that you love. By going to a specialist manufacturer you can have what you really like, but on a smaller scale – provided of course the scale actually does work in your home.

Just be careful of con artists who promise to do the job but don’t understand how design factors (specifically size and scale) work. You might end up with something that looks really awful after spending a whole lot of money. If your aren’t sure, buy what you can see and sit on before you pay for it.

What to look for when buying a couch

Whatever type of couch or sofa you want to buy, first and foremost decide on a style. Also have a good idea of what you want in terms of color and finish. A couch is really what designers call an “anchor” piece, with other chairs, tables and so on adding to the general design scheme. For this reason it is wise to choose the best couch or couches you can afford.

Stores that offer custom-made couches usually display basic pieces in a range of shapes and sizes. Make sure you identify exactly what it is you want. For instance the length of a couch may be anything from 137 cm to 229 cm. Arm and back heights may also vary. You may end up paying a bit more for a custom size, but if it works for you there is absolutely no doubt that it will be worth it.

Even if you only want one couch, consider seating for at least six people. Very few people stay at home alone for their entire lives! Maybe think of buying two custom made couches. Otherwise buy a few single chairs for people to sit on.

Remember that upholstered furniture can always be reupholstered in a different fabric later on when your tastes change or when you can afford something better. With this in mind, it is sometimes better to buy a secondhand piece of furniture that has been really well made, and then have it reupholstered in a trendy fabric or in leather. It might not seem to be “custom” made, but often the older designs are a lot better, particularly when good-quality wood has been used to make them.

Finding a suitable manufacturer
The best way to find reputable, reliable and reasonable manufacturers of custom-made couches and other furniture is often word of mouth. If your friends have had a good experience, then it is certainly worth trying the same company. Another way is to check out advertisements posted or placed by manufacturers who say that they do what you need.

Perhaps you might be able to find it at some low budget furniture stores that offer HUGE discounts for their display set?  Perhaps you might get it from another less developed country? Or maybe you can get it at garage sales?

Whatever it is, we are unable to do it at that price!

Replace your flat patio furniture cushions with new outdoor foam.  eFoamstore uses outdoor foam to make new cushions to your size specifications and we’ll help you measure them as well.  The open cell structure of outdoor foam allows water to pass through easily.  This drainable property is perfect for areas in which cushions may get wet.

 

Replacing Patio Cushions with Outdoor Foam

 When measuring outdoor foam seat cushions to replace the foam there are a few things to taken into consideration:

• The new foam interior needs to be slightly bigger than your cushion cover
  This allows the foam to be slightly compacted and will help it to fill out the cushion cover properly

• If the foam interior is too small then your seat cushion cover will wrinkle when you sit on it

• If the new foam fillings are too big you may strain the seams and zip on your cushion cover and your new cushion will not look right

When replacing seat cushion foam, generally, you will need to add 1” to the cushion width, and 1” to the cushion length.  You may also want to add 1” to the depth of the cushion as well.  This will ensure that your seat cushions have a domed appearance instead of looking too flat.

Best Foam to Use for Seat Cushion Replacement?

Rectangular foam, which can be rounded at the edge, is recommended for most applications.  High density outdoor foam is recommended.
